What Is Self Storage & How Does it Work?

Just familiarizing yourself with self storage? We cover some of the basic questions to get you up to speed.

How does self storage work?

Storage facilities, like Extra Space Storage, offer storage space (referred to as a storage unit or storage locker) on a month-to-month basis for you to rent when you need more space. With self storage, you move your belongings in and out and can access your belongings during the facility’s gate hours. When you no longer need the space, you just inform the location and move your belongings out of the storage unit.

What can I store in a storage unit?

From furniture to vehicles, storage units can be used for a wide range of items. For things that can’t be stored in storage units, the general rule is that anything that is illegal, flammable or combustible, or that will rot can’t be stored.

Can Be Stored

  • Furniture
  • Appliances
  • Clothes
  • Electronics
  • Books
  • Vehicles
  • And much more!

Can’t Be Stored

  • Food
  • Ammunition
  • Drugs

What can a storage unit be used for?

People turn to self storage for all kinds of creative reasons. Below we address the questions people have about how and what they can use their storage unit for.

Can You Run a Business out of a Storage Unit?

Extra Space Storage is committed to offering business-friendly storage solutions. Our storage units provide convenient, affordable space to store inventory and parts and materials, offer warehouse storage space for businesses with large storage needs, and we have business centers at select locations with office space and amenities like wi-fi available for businesses to operate from our facility.

How secure is self storage?

Do storage facilities have cameras? Are there lights? Trusting a storage facility with your things is a big decision. Extra Space Storage takes our responsibility to provide a secure storage space very seriously. All Extra Space Storage locations include security measures, such as:

  • Video Surveillance
  • Facilities are well lit
  • Controlled access that requires code to enter
  • Manager on site during office hours

Specific locations have even more advanced security measures, including:

  • Resident manager that lives on site
  • Individually-alarmed storage units
  • Restricted access to only the floor your storage unit is on

Are storage units climate controlled?

Yes, Extra Space Storage offers storage units with climate control. Climate-controlled storage is a common indoor storage amenity at many self storage facilities across the nation!

Climate-controlled storage typically keeps storage units between temperatures of 55 and 80 degrees year-round. We recommend climate control for anyone storing sensitive items—such as clothing, electronics, furniture, antiques, books, and musical instruments—in areas of the U.S. with seasonal temperature fluctuations, such as hot summers and cold winters.

While climate control is the most widely available option at Extra Space Storage, we also have other types of temperature-controlled storage available at select locations. These are:

  • Air-Cooled Storage: Recommended for anyone storing sensitive items in areas of the U.S. that experience extreme heat and high temperatures.
  • Heated Storage: Recommended for anyone storing sensitive items in areas of the U.S. that experience extreme cold and low temperatures.
  • Dehumidified Storage: Recommended for anyone storing sensitive items in areas of the U.S. that experience high humidity.
